A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words Janet Phillips Clough trained at Falmouth School of Art, studying pottery, drawing and painting. In the sixties she spent several years painting and exhibiting in Cyprus alongside Christoforo Savva, Lonia Efthivoulou and others. She taught Art for a while at King Richard School on the Military Base at Dhekelia, but other interests were soon to beckon and she found herself drifting into broadcasting, She Joined the British Forces Broadcasting Service and worked in Cyprus, Aden and Tobruk in Libya, where she met and fell in love with fellow broadcaster Alan Clough. They were married, and Janet decided to give up her career to bring up her two sons. So painting came back into the frame again, much to the delight of the boys! The family moved several times - back to Cyprus, Malta, Gibraltar, Berlin and Cologne, until they finally came home to England to settle in Banbury. The children, now grown up, have flown the nest, and so there is more time for herself, and she is looking forward to painting again. Alan who cannot paint or draw spends much of his time in the garden and burning perfectly good cuts of meat on the barbecue. Every painting should be an adventure, she says. What you don't want is to become formulaic, i.e. find a formula which is attractive and simply produce more of the same - as they say 'once you've read one you've read them all'. But each time you pick up your brush you should feel you are embarking upon a new discovery, a new experiment, and you hope your work will reflect this. It puts me in mind of Picasso's reply when asked what advice he would give young artists; he said 'keep your pencil sharp'.
